In
our last issue of BeansTalk, we asked parents to share their
best tips for Halloween. It was a pretty open-ended question,
so we were surprised that all of the responses we received
addressed the same issue – candy. More
specifically, they offered clever ways to separate children
from their bulging bags of sweets. Inspired by these suggestions,
we’re offering a “Toys for Treats” program
all this week at Magic Beans.
When you and your child trade in at least 1 lb. of candy,
we’ll give you 15% off any one toy item, plus your
child gets some special goodies, too – one toy for
each pound of candy exchanged – from our special Toys
for Treats grab bag.
We’ll have Trick or Treating all day tomorrow in the
store, but we’ll be distributing some special Halloween
toys and trinkets, in lieu of candy. Please stop by and show
off those cute costumes.

Halloween candy, visit

want to hear your thoughts.
Our prize-winning Halloween trick was submitted
by Ro Aldrich. We loved the tooth-fairy-esque magic of this
method:
“After a fun night of trick-or-treating around the
neighborhood, our kids fill a small zip-lock bag with their
favorite candies...and that's all they get to eat/keep. That
night, they place the rest of the candy in a plastic cauldron
on the front step for the ‘Little Green Witch.’ The ‘Little
Green Witch’ leaves my kids a wrapped present
on the front steps in return for the candy.
This
Sunday, November 5th, pop your kid(s) into your favorite buggy
(or just bring your own two feet) and join Stroller for a Cause to raise
money and awareness for Darfur, a region of the Sudan that has been called
the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.
Registration begins at 8:30, and the stroll goes from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. (rain or shine!). Participants will stroll along a 2.2 mile course
that begins and ends at the corner of Stedman and Harvard Streets in
Brookline. An added bonus: Julia Priest of Music Together Newton will
be there during registration to get everyone singing and dancing before
the big stroll.
Minimum donation is $25 for each stroller team, plus a suggested $20
for each additional person. Participants are encouraged to
collect additional donations as well. All contributions are
fully tax deductible and will go to help Mothers and Children of Darfur
through My
Sister’s Keeper,
a women-led, women-focused, humanitarian action group based
in Jamaica Plain that works to reintegrate war-torn communities
in Southern Sudan. The top fundraiser of the day will win a $50 gift
certificate to Magic Beans.
To participate or volunteer, email Karen at karen@bellyshmooze.org.
Please let her know the number of family and friends joining you. And
spread the word!
Magic
Beans still has a limited number of dates available for organizations
that wish to arrange a private shopping night. These have
been very successful fundraisers that also offer great fun
and convenience. For more details on this program, please
