Poor babies: their teeny-tiny, newly-minted bodies are still adapting to life in the wider world, and all sorts of weird discomforts can get in the way of their rest, including startles and twitches. That’s why swaddling blankets are a must for newborns, but older, more active babies who have outgrown swaddling sometimes need help calming down and getting to sleep, and that’s where Baby Merlin comes in!
The Baby Merlin’s Cotton Magic Sleepsuit casts a restful spell on your restless babe by applying the same gentle snugness as a swaddling blanket with a little more developmentally-appropriate freedom of movement. In the Magic Sleepsuit, babies fall asleep more easily and sleep for longer, resulting in a happier baby by day and more sleep for the entire household by night!
The Cotton Magic Sleepsuit is made with two layers of soft, breathable jersey cotton, which sandwich a layer of polyfill that adds warmth and gives the sleepsuit a little bulk (one reviewer described it as looking a little like a baby spacesuit!). It has open hands for grasping and play and open feet for ventilation (add socks if tiny toes get chilly); babies shouldn’t need more than one layer under the sleepsuit. In order to simplify dressing and diaper changes, the Baby Merlin’s Cotton Magic Sleepsuit has double zippers, and a scooped neckline helps to keep fabric away from baby’s face as she sleeps.
Does the Magic Sleepsuit work? When it does, it’s a lifesaver: one parent reviewer wrote of his baby that “The change in his sleep pattern was immediate and remarkable.” The manufacturer recommends beginning use of the Magic Sleepsuit when your baby is able to kick out of swaddles, but some reviewers have started earlier – as long as it’s sized correctly (comfortable but snug), it should be fine.
The Baby Merlin’s Cotton Magic Sleepsuit is machine-washable and machine-dryable; see the menu above for sizing and colors.
I bought this suit out if desperation - my little guy (at three months) would only go 4-6 hours at night and then be up every 45 minutes to an hour from 3-7. In fact, the store only had pink in his size and I usually go for gender neutral cream, but I bought it because I needed a solution. First night he went 6 hours and then was up as his arms kept hitting the sides of the bassinet and startling him. Prior to this he had been swaddled so I didn't realize he had outgrown the bassinet. Next night, I set up his crib and he woke up only ONCE between 9 and 7 for feeding at 4. Third night he was up twice in the morning. Last night (fourth night), he SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT!!! He went from 9 pm-6 am without waking up! Of course I was up wondering why he wasn't, but I'm so glad he went through the night. We also use an extra absorbent night diaper to minimize his waking up. This is totally worth it! I also use this for napping and it has helped him sleep longer. In addition, I bought Goumikids mittens to keep his hands warm as they are now away from his body unlike swaddling.
effective, soft, cozy, more sleep
took a few days for our child to feel comfortable in it, warm, heavy
We love Baby Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit! It eased our daughter's transition from the swaddle, and greatly increased the number of hours she is willing to sleep consecutively at night. (Previously, she was up every 2 hours or so. Within a few days of using it, she started sleeping 5-6+ hours straight.) It took her a few days to get used to the weight of it, but now she loves her 'astronaut suit.'
