about the Calafant Calabot Robot

Your child has been daydreaming about having his very own robot. The robot would be his best friend, and would help him clean his room, and would also be able to fly, and it would have laser beam eyes. It would sleep in his closet, walk the dog in the morning, and fight bad guys in its spare time.

We don’t sell a robot that can do all of these things just yet, but the Calafant Calabot is a good start. Kids can build this enormous cardboard robot, and decorate it themselves! Here’s how it works:

  1. First, lay out the recycled cardboard pieces and match them up to the pieces in the instruction booklet. The instructions are easy-to-use diagrams, with no words, so children don’t need to be able to read to build their Calabot robot. The pieces are pre-cut and pre-punched, and are scored along the fold lines, so the end result is almost guaranteed to look good.
  2. Next, assembly: small children will probably need your help for this stage. The folded pieces should slide together easily with pre-cut tabs and slots. The assembled ‘bot is impressively large: it’s about 21” x 16” x 9” – as big as many kids!
  3. Here’s where your child’s creativity kicks in: it’s time to decorate your robot. Use anything you have on hand – paint, finger paints, markers, crayons, etc. Then, get some glue out and make your robot look high-tech using assorted household objects. Reviewers have suggested using speaker pieces, digital clocks, LED “candles,” the guts from broken electronic toys, and more. Kids can name their robot, or decide on its function – is it Reginald the Robot Butler? Ruby, the Robot Princess? Roscoe the Robo-Cop? Roger, the Robot Superhero? The only limit is your child’s imagination.

The Calafont Calabot is designed to hold together well for open-ended creative play, so it will become a fixture in your playroom and in your home. Assembling the Calabot is a great project for families to do together, too, and a great way to spend a rainy day. The Calabot is suitable for children ages 5 and up.
