about the City Square Off

How do you build a city? It depends on the time period, and your priorities. The earliest cities with a planned grid of streets arose in the Neolithic era, in the part of the world that now includes India and Pakistan. The cities of the Roman Empire were also built on a grid, with essential services in the city center and a wall around the borders. In the Renaissance, star-shaped cities were built, since they were deemed easier to defend. On the other hand, some cities have grown up organically with no plan at all, even in modern times – for instance, Houston, TX still has no comprehensive zoning ordinance.

And neither do the teeny cities you build in City Square Off, the tactical city planning game from Gamewright. The goal is efficiency: you need to fit the most Tetris-like shapes into your square game board, around the core of a small city center. Ready, set, build! City Square Off teaches spatial relations, logic, and strategy, and is easy to learn but challenging to master. Recommended for ages 8 and up; play with two players or two teams.

Gamewright City Square Off includes 42 city tiles, 21 cards, 4 starter tiles, two game boards, and a rule book.
