The hobby of building model ships is a truly ancient one. Sailors built tiny models of boats to pass the time on long sea voyages. Ancient Egyptians even included model ships with other items buried with pharaohs. In the 1800s, model ships in bottles came into vogue: they required meticulous attention to detail, with tiny hinges created to erect the masts after the boat was inserted into the bottle.
The Queen Anne’s Revenge from LEGO Systems carries on the model shipbuilding tradition with serious pizzazz: the finished boat looks glorious, and it takes some real time, effort, and attention to detail to build. Of course, any kid (or parent) can build it, but what would the fun be if it were quick and easy?
Based on the Queen Anne’s Revenge from the film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” this LEGO pirate set includes 1097 pieces, and results in a beautifully detailed boat that’s made to be played with. The Captain’s quarters are detachable, the cannons move, and you can steer with the helm. The billowing red sails have gorgeous pirate insignia, and the sides of the ship are lined with creepy skeletons. Seven minifigures are included: Blackbeard, Captain Jack Sparrow, Angelica, the Quartermaster, the Cook, and two pirates, plus lanterns, fire elements, and more. The completed ship is about 20” tall and about 25” wide. Your child will definitely want to display the Queen Anne’s Revenge in a place of honor!
Building the LEGO Queen Anne’s Revenge will take a few hours (reviewers said that it took a single child an entire day), and the bags of LEGO pieces are numbered to keep you organized. This is a great activity for a parent and child to do together, too! The Queen Anne’s Revenge is suggested for ages 9 and up.
WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
