It’s pretty and portable, pert and purposeful – it’s Pipa! The innovative infant car seat from Dutch company Nuna is one of the lightest seats we’ve found. It’s also easy to install, loaded with safety features, and has the fantastic “Dream Drape” to protect baby from the sun and the elements.
The Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat 2016/2017 weighs in at an astonishing 7.7 pounds. And with its ergonomically-designed carry handle, it is incredibly easy to tote your baby from house to car, and car to stroller. The designers at Nuna managed to pack a tremendous number of safety features into the Pipa car seat (and, in particular, the Pipa car seat base), including:
The Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat 2016/2017 also has a heavy-duty plastic shell – it’s light, but it’s tough!
We also love the unusual and useful Dream Drape, which shelters your babe from light and weather as she naps: it attaches to the end of the Pipa Infant Car Seat with hidden magnets, so you don’t have to fiddle with fasteners. If you’re not using the Dream Drape, it tucks away seamlessly into a hidden compartment. It’s made from UV fabric and mesh, letting you see inside while letting air through.
Additional features include:

Product dimensions: 21” high, 17” wide, 28” deep
NOTE: The Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat base is included.
Comfortable for baby, so easy to install, great sun cover
I spend many hours agonising over trying to find the perfect infant seat for our 4th baby. I found so many infant seats to be very hard with very little padding. The memory foam in the Pipa makes it very comfortable for our baby. Nuna Pipa seemed to be one of the only seats I could find on the market that was okeo tex certified. It is so easy to install in the car and clicks in and out of the base with ease. We used in on a recent trip to florida without the base and it secured very well with just the carseat. I love that it uses the European seatbelt installation. The sun visor and sun cover are great and keep (well meaning I sure) prying eyes from waking our sleeping baby, as well as keeping the harsh sunlight from shining in baby's eyes. We have been using it for 7 months now and the fabric still looks great. I purchased the Scarlet color, so nice to have something other than black. I use it with a Bugaboo Chameleon stroller base and it's a dream to push around. I would buy this seat again in a heart beat.
european standards = no flame retardants, dream drape, super light, rocks beautifully on the floor, blackberry color, great fabric, seamless stroller compatibility, snug infant insert, super simple car installation, car seat base stabilizing arm is badass
the 5-point harness is maybe a little too involved
We are exactly one week into the journey of parenting and we have zero regrets about buying this European car seat.
We love the color and how light it is. Our baby falls right to sleep when we snug her in there. It fits beautifully and seamlessly into our Nuna Tavo stroller and we love that.
I love the fabrics...seem very organic in that there's no plasticky feel which you can get in some popular car seats. Of course we love the high safety ratings this car seat receives as well.
Overall as first time parents finding our way, we're delighted with our purchase and would do it again.
Lightweight, high quality,
My husband and I chose this car seat after seeing it in person at a Magic Beans store. We love how lightweight it is. The quality of the material is wonderful. I've already had to wash the material and it turned out looking just like it had before I needed to wash it. We joke because I was so concerned about the weight of the car seat that I never thought we'd have such a big baby. So now it's especially nice having it lightweight because our baby never was.
Excellent car seat, very appealing and an added sense of security with the additional leg support that extended to the floor of the car.
Least toxic, easy install, lightweight
Shade canopy, price
I'm one of those mommas that CARES about chemicals. After doing loads of research I found that the Nuna is the best option (only option??) on the market if you are looking for a car seat that's not saturated with chemical flame retardants. Starting in Jan. 2015 it has been possible to buy furniture without flame retardants because (after 30ish) years of dousing us with toxins it turns out that the chemicals don't actually help slow fire at all and may increase certain materials' flammability. Also, the toxic goo has been found to be bad for us. Yowza! So, if you want your baby to be safe and not catch on fire (what a choice?) the Nuna is the car seat for you. You can look on their site for specifics. I spent DAYS researching everything I could find. Hopefully there will be other options soon because the price tag is steep but it's totally worth it to me.
The ONLY bummer about this car seat (I have 4 kids and have used a lot of different car seats.) is that the sunshade is kind of lame. The back part doesn't move out of the way easily so it's hard to get your arm under the handle when you are carrying it around, especially if you have a jacket on. And, the fancy front part is way too much effort. A simpler design would be more effective.
Lightweight, well made, easy to install
Huge, poorly placed warning labels
The seat is well reviewed most everywhere and I haven't doubt it's very safe but I feel other parents looking for seats should know that the seat arrives with four huge warning labels permenately glued to the fabric. Each label is 2x5". There are two on the infant insert, on either side of where the baby's face goes, and two more on the main part of the fabric, again on either side of where the baby's face sits. In ten years of using at least a dozen different car seats I've never seen warning labels anything like this. I'm very uncomfortable with the thought of putting a newborn in a seat where they will be breathing in fumes from the plastic, ink, and glue used in the labels and where the labels are so large and on such soft side padding that a baby could fall asleep with their nose up against it and have trouble breathing. Of course there must be warning labels on a safety device but these are excessively large and very poorly placed.
I contacted the company (I purchased it direct from the manufacturer) and while they were very polite about it they did readily admit that they receive many complaints about the labels, are trying to get a disclaimer added to the pictures, and are hoping to change the labels in the future. They told me the photos on their website and in their catalogs have the warning labels photoshopped out. The option given was for me to ship it back to them and wait for a refund which didn't work for me since I need the seat right away. I'm so disappointed both in the look of the seat and the fact that the company is engaging in false advertising.
Incredibly light; Dream Drape is an amazing feature; seat fabric is easy to remove and throw in the wash
Not compatible with as many strollers as other seats
We love this car seat. We actually didn't own a car when we purchased it, and selected it based on its weight, since we figured we'd be carrying it a lot (it's the lightest seat we could find at 7.7 pounds) and how easily it will strap into cabs, parents' cars, etc. using just a seat belt.
We did end up buying a car after our son was born and it was very easy to install, and I love how easy it is to take the seat in and out.
Our favorite feature by far is the Dream Drape, something I haven't seen on any other car seat. It extends down over the baby which is very helpful for naps-- and helps shield the baby a bit when we take him out in public.
The only downside is that as a newer seat it isn't compatible with as many strollers as, say, a Chicco seat would be. For the most part it works with Maxi Cosi adapters-- EXCEPT with Bugaboo strollers (which of course is what we bought). We ended up buying a separate stroller to use with the seat because we loved it so much but just something to keep in mind.
lightweight, easiest install base, no gaudy patterns, shade is super helpful, rigid latch is the best.
i researched this seat a ton before it was released and bought it as soon as i could and have no regrets. this seat is wonderful- its light, the harness is smooth, the pull-down shade is absolutely terrific, a great idea- we use it all the time. the base has the fold down leg, which definitely makes it more stable than other seats- but most importantly, the rigid latch install is foolproof. the install is so easy to do correctly its mindless. the rigid latch alone makes this seat worth the money, there are never any concerns over proper installs. safe safe safe!
The right infant car seat will make it so much easier to get from Point A to Point B with your new baby. But there are so many choices out there – which infant car seat is best for you?
In this video, the experts at Magic Beans talk about our favorites: five infant car seats with advanced safety features, and some cool extras, too. Most importantly, all five of these infant car seats are designed for EASY installation, which is absolutely crucial for your child’s safety – a car seat that’s installed incorrectly won’t protect your child adequately in the event of a collision! Your child’s safety is your number one concern, and that means it’s our number one concern, too.
The seats introduced in this video are:
- The Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat: The Pipa is a Magic Beans favorite because it’s so lightweight, and because it’s full of great features like a load leg (a safety feature common in Europe but seldom seen in the US), and the Dream Drape, which adds shade, darkness, and privacy for your napping tot.
- The Cybex Cloud Q Infant Car Seat: This ultra-innovative seat transforms seamlessly into a lie-flat stroller bassinet that your baby can safety and comfortably ride in all day! Plus, the Lateral Side Impact Protection system and the load leg are great safety features that add tremendous peace of mind.
- The Doona Infant Car Seat: It’s a one-piece travel system! Doona transforms into a stroller, making it a great fit for families who are in and out of the car all day (or who travel a lot by airplane, taxi, Uber, or Zipcar).
- The UPPAbaby MESA Infant Car Seat: In addition to terrific safety features and a really simple and snazzy base installation, this seat is great because it’s compatible with some of our most popular strollers. In particular, it’s made to fit on the popular UPPAbaby Vista and UPPAbaby Cruz strollers with no need to purchase additional adapters!
- The Chicco Keyfit Infant Car Seat: This lightweight seat is easy to install, and is compatible with a huge range of strollers, ensuring that you can create the travel system that works for you.
