No doubt you’re familiar with the cliché of the inventor declaring “Eureka!”* But, did you know that it originated with Archimedes? According to Wikipedia:
“He reportedly proclaimed “Eureka!” when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the water level rose—he suddenly understood that the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had submerged… He then realized that the volume of irregular objects could be measured with precision, a previously intractable problem. He is said to have been so eager to share his discovery that he leapt out of his bathtub and ran through the streets of Syracuse naked.”
Gabby Calderon, the creator of the Beco Baby Carrier collection, describes her “eureka!” moment as an inventor as follows:
“I was making Mei Tais and Onbuhimos, pouches, ring slings and wraps and while the business was doing so-so, it was not really anything magnificent… By the fall, my son was 6 months old and getting heavier. Also, making traditional carriers, I was a bit tired of all that wrapping and strapping. Just to make it easier for myself, I chopped the long Mei Tai straps and added double ring slings at the waist and the side of the carrier’s body, where the straps normally crossed the body… But since there was no padding whatsoever, it was not comfy either with my growing son.
“At that point, I took a good look at my hiking backpack. That backpack is one of the biggest investments I ever made, but worth every penny. I based the Beco design on the ergonomics of this super backpack. I tried to make the Mei Tai look and work like that backpack. And that was it! At least for me, I knew I finally got something good.”
Since her discovery in 2005, Gabby has been carefully tailoring and tweaking her designs, and Beco baby carriers are now wildly popular, earning rave reviews from moms and dads everywhere. They’re pretty, they’re easy to use, they come in loads of great patterns, they’re comfy, and the Gemini Carrier gives you four options for carrying positions, starting from birth (with no insert needed) all the way up to 35 pounds. And our customers love Beco: to date, every single parent who has reviewed the Gemini on our webpage has given it the top-notch “five bean” rating.

* The word “eureka” itself comes from the Ancient Greek for “I have found it.”
