As habitual readers of Spilling the Beans are well aware, exploring the world of new baby products and discovering gear that will make your life easier is a passion for us here at Magic Beans. At the ABC Kids Expo and other trade shows, we’re always ferreting out new innovations that will truly transform the way you care for your baby, from feeding to sleeping to soothing – and especially travel! Because for teeny-tiny little people, babies really add complexity to the process of getting from Point A to Point B.

So while we’ve known about the Doona Infant Car Seat for a while, we’re keeping a close eye on this exciting new product, because not only have we never seen anything like it, but we also think it will solve common travel issues exceptionally well. A quick refresher on Doona, and some updates:

  • Yes, the Doona Infant Car Seat transforms into a stroller! Instead of unfolding a travel frame or stroller to pop your car seat onto a travel system, you just pop out Doona’s wheels and you’re ready to roll. It’s so simple and beautiful.
  • Traveling by cab? No need to stow a separate frame in the trunk and hold up traffic while assembling your travel system – just pop out those wheels!
  • Traveling by plane? No need to check your stroller separately – just stroll on board, pop in the wheels, and buckle your Doona Infant Car Seat in. It’s certified for air travel!

Now that the Doona Infant Car Seat is closer to its actual release – we’re hoping to take preorders starting in November, and have Doona car seats in stock in January, and the infant car seat base should appear mid-2015 – specs on this product are also closer to finalized:

  • Price: about $350 (just the seat, no base)
  • Weight: about 15 pounds
  • Capacity: 4-35 pounds, or up to 32”
  • Shipping: USA only
  • Accessories: Sunshade Extension, Rain Cover, Snap on Storage, Wheel Covers, Vehicle Seat Protector

If you want to get one of the first Doonas rolling off of our shelves, sign up TODAY to get onto our mailing list for updates. Don’t wait – there’s already a lot of interest in this product and we expect them to sell really, really fast!

  1. I’m due in January and I really want this doona car seat but it scares me that there is no promise date when it will be available? Do you know the exact date it will be available? And the exact price?

  2. It will be $350. We expect it to ship in December, but with new products there can be delays, so we can’t guarantee 100% that you’ll be able to get it on time.

  3. How much are the bases?

  4. We don’t have that information yet. We do know that bases will be sold separately, and that they’ll be available at least a few months later than the seat itself.

  5. I’m also due in January and interested, but the delay of a base worries me. No estimated release on the base?

  6. will all the colors be available?

  7. So since I received this email that means I’m on list to buy when available right?

  8. Can this be used without a base in the car?

  9. How does not having the base affect the usage of the product?

  10. If i purchase the doona carseat, Can it fit in another base or universal base of another carseat?

  11. Mistie: No – you need to sign up on the mailing list on the link. Scroll to the bottom of this page and sign up:

  12. Jeff: It just means you have to install it with the seat belt each time. Given that this is a product that’s made to simplify travel that doesn’t include your own car, this is a good thing – you can install it easily in a cab or on a plane!

  13. Daisy: No, only on its own base, which will be available for sale next year.

  14. Zoila: Sign up for the mailing list and we’ll let you know!

  15. Stacey: The latest info we’ve heard estimates that the base will be available at some point in the spring, but it’s so hard to tell with new products. Sign up on the mailing list and we’ll give you the latest information when we have it.

  16. Meghan: We don’t have that information yet.

  17. Very excited about this new product! Our plan is to have another baby towards the end of 2015. Do you suggest pre-ordering one of these if we are not yet pregnant? Or, by that time, should we just be able to purchase one? Also, what are the safety ratings on this new car seat? Have any trials been done? Thanks!

  18. Rebekah: The safety testing has not been completed yet, but it cannot be sold in the US until it passes all US safety standards.

We expect there to be ample inventory in the US in the 2nd half of the year, but that is too far out for us to know 100% what the situation will be.

  19. The convenience of this type of car seat sounds like something I would appreciate. I am also glad to hear they will be making a base available.

  20. Very nifty stroller! I liked the part where it is highly adaptable, either travelling by car and/or plane. Thanks for sharing this.

  21. can someone clarify for me what basis this would work with. Because I don’t want to get the car seat without the base or a base that works. to me I find it odd that they would sell a car seat and not the base in till mid next year

  22. Katie: the Doona will only work with the Doona base. However, it’s made to be quick and easy to install with the seatbelt in your car, so it’s perfectly usable without the base.

  23. I fell in love when my boyfriend showed me this. So can’t wait I’m due in May so hopefully it’s Released by then.

  24. My sister in law is due in December. She and my brother are going on their 4th baby, and this would be ideal for them. What’s the price with the base, and how long would shipping take?

  25. Angela: the Doona is not going to be available until at least January:

…with the base available later in the year. We don’t know when the base will be available yet, nor what it will cost. However, the Doona can absolutely be installed without a base. Sorry we don’t have better information for you right now! Nailing the timing with brand-new products can be tough.

  26. Is this being released in the united states in april?

  27. Melinda: the latest we’ve heard is that yes, it should be available in the US in April. However, the date of release has been pushed back several times, so if your due date is right around that time, it’s a good idea to have a backup plan. Let us know if you need any help selecting a car seat – our customer service team will be happy to help you out!

  28. Will the price still be $350? Other sites are listing $499. Any idea on if it’s the beginning of April? Why has it been delayed? Wonderful US regs?

  29. Kellie: the price has been changed to $499 because the Doona is now being sold with its base (extra convenient!). The latest date of release that we’ve heard is still April, but it’s still subject to change – a combination of safety testing, manufacturing delays, and Chinese New Year have all made it difficult to get out on time. We’ll keep you updated – make sure you sign up on the mailing list at http://mbeans.com/doona-infant-car-seat-converts-to-stroller.html !
