Swaddle down under

Aden + AnaisSwaddling saved my sanity with my second child, so it is a topic near and dear to my heart. For months, the only way she would fall asleep was if we swaddled her up tight, straightjacket style, and literally jumped up and down with her in our arms. By the time she outgrew swaddling, I was an expert. I could get a good, tight wrap with just about anything. Right around that time, a horde of new Swaddle blanket designs came on the market. Some were designed with flaps, pockets and folds to make swaddling practically foolproof. Others just aimed to give parents a lot of fabric to work with. But the materials were fairly consistent across the board – cotton knit, fleece or flannel.

On the other side of the world, swaddling is still fairly simple. The Australian swaddle blanket of choice is a big swath of gauzy muslin. Now, two enterprising, transplanted Australian moms are aiming to bring these stateside. I was absolutely smitten with the Aden + Anais swaddle wraps, for so many reasons. First, the material. Muslin is a unique fabric that is very light and breathable, so it accomplishes the security of swaddling without causing the baby to overheat. Plus, they start out soft and get even softer each time you wash them. Second, the look. The light and airy wraps come in packs of four with cute, chic coordinating patterns. Third, the value. A pack of four wraps is $44, so they cost just $11 apiece. Fourth, the size. These are bigger than any other swaddle blanket I’ve seen. They start out at 47″ x 47″ and shrink to about 44″ x 44″.

  1. Oh man. I wish these had been around two years ago. I hope if these do well they’ll make some even bigger. I ended up sewing two flannel blankets together – my daughter slept swaddled until she was 10 months! I had the hardest time finding blankets. I will definitely get these next time around.
