Flying Carpets and Modular Play Tables – Oh my!

Today, we visited the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The place was just oozing coolness, from the fabulous people to the fabulous furniture. We were in town for the weekend, and we were curious to see what we might find. With just two hours to explore, we made quick work of the show, but we did turn up a number of great things, some of which will make it into the store, and some of which will stay on a wish list for now. Here are two highlights.
Flying CarpetAt the top of the wish list was the Flying Carpet chair from Magis Design based in Italy. This was a completely delightful (if also somewhat expensive) piece of furniture that invites all kinds of creative interactions. It functions both as a lounge chair and as a platform for active play. The base is slightly rounded to allow for some calculated instability – enough to give the sensation of flight without the risk of tipping. It’s a great balancing activity, or just chill out and read a book. I loved it.

P'kolino Play TableWe also had a chance to see P’kolino in person for the first time. I’ve been in touch with this new Massachusetts-based company before, and I am very excited about their product line. Their Play Table is a modular system made out of bent plywood and vinyl-upholstered high-density foam. It’s very, very cool but you really need to see it to fully appreciate the genius of the design. The pieces can be configured in a multitude of different ways, and there’s no assembly required at any point. We should have this on display soon, but in the meantime, check out their website, www.pkolino.com.
