Last week, a customer came in and asked if we carried a game called Buy Word. She was shocked that we’d never heard of this game, which was recently named Game of the Year by Games Magazine. We never want to be out of the loop, so I did some research and eventually ordered this game, which has won so many awards that the person I spoke to at the company couldn’t even remember them all.
Basically, it’s a word game with a clever twist. You need to buy your letters, and then you can use them to create words to sell back to the bank, hopefully at a profit. The value of lettes and words is calculated by squaring numbers, so there’s plenty of math learning here, as well. There are a couple of neat variations, including one where you can auction off your words to other players. You can play solitaire, or with up to four people. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
