You don’t have to be a grownup to make an artistic impact. Lavinia “Vinnie” Ream was accomplished enough in 1886, at the age of 18, to be commissioned by Congress to create a marble statue of President Lincoln. Wang Yani’s marvelously expressive paintings of monkeys appeared on postage stamps when she was only 8. And Aelita Andre did her first gallery show in Chelsea at the age of 4 (and believe it or not, her abstract art is truly beautiful).
Your child doesn’t have to be a prodigy to enjoy and benefit from making art, though: we’ve never met a child who didn’t love scribbling with crayons, rolling and kneading modeling dough, and making an unholy mess with paint. read more
For open-ended artistic fun, we’ve got tons of Art Supplies designed for every little artist from beginner to expert. Preschoolers can create their first masterpieces with mess-minimizing Do-A-Dot Art markers and easy-to-grip Finger Crayons. More advanced artists can delve into the mysteries of the Spirogiro, discover the wonders of origami, or just go wild making art in every kind of media at once. Our Dough & Molding department gives a wide variety of options for open-ended modeling fun – take your pick between Play-Doh, Playfoam, Sculpey, Bubber, and more.
For more structured artistic play, Alex Toys offers lots of Little Hands arts & crafts kits, which cater to the artistic abilities of toddlers and preschoolers, giving them results they can proudly show off without needing Mom to do all the work. Once kids have the fine motor skills to manipulate scissors, glue, yarn, and other art supplies, the sky is the limit – they can make everything from mosaics to puppets. If your child has a passion for accessories, she can make oodles of jewelry with our assortment of Bead Kits. And our Fashion Design department delves even further into the world of accessories, with hairbands, wristwatches, tie-dye, and more.
Ultimately, arts and crafts engage a child’s imagination and sharpen her skills, and who knows? Maybe you’ve got the next Vinnie, Yani, or Aelita on your hands. But if you don’t, that’s fine too – because every piece of art your child makes is the most beautiful art in the world, to you. show less
