Choosing the right crib mattress

Choosing the right crib mattress can be complicated. Foam or innerspring? Should I go organic? Is this the right size for my crib? We're here to help answer those and many more questions. Each brand, material, and type has different advantages and disadvantages. Below you will find a general overview of what to look for to find the right mattress for your baby.

Foam Crib Mattresses

Foam crib mattresses are almost always lighter than innerspring and organic alternatives. They generally range between 7 and 10 pounds, making it super easy to lift them out of the crib to change dirty sheets. Foan mattresses also tend to be the least expensive type of crib mattress, which is perfect for parents on a budget.

Foam crib mattresses with a fast recovery rate (the opposite of memory foam) are best for babies because imprints in memory and other soft foams can make it difficult for babies to change positions, thereby posing a potential suffocation hazard.

Innerspring Crib Mattresses

Innerspring crib mattresses tend to be more durable than their foam counterparts. Just like with adult mattresses, the lower the gauge and higher the coil count, the firmer the mattress. Firmer mattreses are best for babies' developing bones and soft mattresses may pose a suffocation risk.

Innerspring mattresses tend to be heavier and more expensive than foam, but you do get more options to choose from including partially or fully organic mattresses.

Organic Crib Mattresses

Organic baby crib mattresses come in many forms. Most are made of a combination of organic cotton, lambswool, natural latex, and coconut coir. Proponents of organic mattresses say that their lack of toxic chemicals leads to a safer environment for baby. Because of their lack of chemicals and treatments, organic mattresses do not need to off-gas.

Natural latex is often used for padding with organic crib mattresses. Although it is a natural material, some children may have or develop an allergy which would require the purchase of a new mattress.
