Project Nursery: Boston weekend is coming soon! Spotlight on ducduc

Leading up to our Project Nursery: Boston weekend, we’re profiling participating companies. Get to know our nursery brands, and find the furniture and accessories that are perfect for you!

2007-12-17-ducducSometimes, all it takes to start a company is wanting something and finding that there’s nowhere to purchase it. Philip Erdoes of ducduc explains the inspiration for the company at Prendismo.com:

“Basically it’s the old story of a parent not being able to find what they wanted for their children… I have two children, Mia and Morgan, 4 and 2, and I couldn’t find the type of home furnishing that I wanted for their rooms.”

Erdoes, a venture capitalist and dad of three, wasn’t looking for just any mass-produced kids’ furniture, or even high-end furniture – he wanted a precise aesthetic that no existing manufacturer at the time could match. So he corralled his friend Brady Wilcox, with a background in architecture and fashion, plus interior design genius David Harris and operations whiz Rebby Gregg, to create the kind of furniture he wanted in his own home.

The result is what (the sadly defunct) Cookie Magazine described as “furniture for kids [that is] built as smart as if it were for adults.”

“It’s not childlike in terms of its form,” notes Wilcox in the Cookie article. “Our definition of ‘kid-friendly’ is combining functionality, safety, and quality materials.” ducduc furniture is also eco-friendly, made with 100% sustainable hardwoods and non-toxic, water-based finishes, and with a manufacturing process that minimizes energy requirement and waste.

But for the moment, let’s concentrate on the fun part: style and creativity! Here are a few articles and video clips where members of the ducduc team talk about their design obsessions, and how they bring them back to ducduc:

Brady Wilcox explores rocking chairs – and how his Oklahoma upbringing got him started on furniture – with the New York Times

David Harris talks about his design influences at Doodle Home

And finally, don’t forget – design inspiration comes from everywhere! ducduc founder Philip Erdoes talks about his love for cowboy boots

The ducduc blog hasn’t been updated recently, but it also demonstrates how much the ducduc team loves modern design, and keeping up with innovations and trends.
