Scoot safely: Fitting your child’s sports helmet

Kickboard Scooters are flying out of our stores (check out these great sale prices!), and where there are scooters, there should be helmets. Whether your child is scooting or skating, skiing or biking, it’s so easy to provide excellent protection and peace of mind with a good helmet, and we’ve got a great selection of adorable designs from Nutcase.

One question we get a lot in the stores is: how do I make sure the helmet fits? The Operations Assistant at our Brookline store and a seasoned toy and gear expert, did some research that we want to share with you – bike helmets save lives, and the right fit is essential.

Here are some basic tips for helmet fitting found on bicycling.com:

 “Wear it right: Low, level, and snug: That’s how your helmet should sit on your head. Here’s how to get a perfect fit.

• Look in a mirror. Your helmet should sit level on your head, and the front of the helmet should cover most of your forehead. If the helmet tilts back and exposes your forehead, it’s not going to protect you.
• Connect the chin strap, and tighten it so that it’s snug beneath your chin; you should barely be able to fit a finger between the strap and your chin. Adjust the side straps so that the point of the V sits just below your ears.
• Push the helmet back on your head. Can you move the helmet more than an inch? Tighten the straps in front of your ears (loosen the rear straps so that the V points still sit just below your ears). If you can push the helmet forward, adjust the straps behind your ears. In the end, you shouldn’t be able to move the helmet more than an inch in any direction.”

The sizing dial lets you click the helmet tighter for a truly snug fit, and the magnetic clip on the chin strap, which prevents pinching, is such a fantastic comfort feature.*
