Upcoming Bone Marrow Drives

bone-marrow-drive-blog-graphicAbout 3,200 children are diagnosed with leukemia every year. Thankfully, for many, there is hope of a cure through a bone marrow (blood stem cell or umbilical cord blood) transplant. Our friends at Gift of Life are working hard to create a robust registry to match donors with recipients. Because of this, Gift of Life has become the world leader in facilitating these transplants for children and adults who suffer from many life-threatening diseases.

Their philosophy is simple: A match. Anytime. Anywhere. For anyone. We love how tirelessly they work to create opportunities for people like you and me to be donors, so we wanted to share with you some opportunities to help. All you have to do is get your cheek swabbed, so your cells can be tested to see if they match the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue type of a patient waiting for a donor. Then they will place you on their donor list. When you’re a match, you’ll be called to help save someone’s life.

We hope you’ll consider participating in their very special program. If you live in the South Shore, there’s an opportunity to be swabbed this Sunday, May 1st (details below), and we will be holding a Bone Marrow Drive on Sunday, May 22nd at the Magic Beans location in Brookline.

Bone Marrow Drive – Sunday, May 1st
9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Congregation Sha’aray Shalom Synagogue; 1112 Main Street, Hingham, MA 02043.
12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Wompatuck State Park, Hingham, MA off of Route 228.

Bone Marrow Drive – Sunday, May 22nd
11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Magic Beans in Brookline; 312 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA 02446.

Eligible donors must be between the ages of 18-60 and in general good health, must meet the guidelines, and must be willing to donate to any patient, at any time, worldwide.

If you are unable to attend, you can register to be a donor online, or please consider making a $54 contribution to help cover the cost of testing by visiting www.giftoflife.org.
