About the Diono Radian RXT Convertible Car Seat

Sometimes, all it takes to understand the value of a product is a good visual. So we’d like to direct you to the pictures of a Diono Radian car seat on the car-seat.org forums.* In the pictures, you’ll see Sarah Maglione’s car, crushed under three floors of a parking garage – and her Radian car seat, still intact.

Not only is the Diono Radian RXT Car Seat absolutely indestructible, but it’s also incredibly practical: your child can enjoy the benefits of this rolling fortress from birth all the way up to 120 pounds. It’s also terrifically easy to use, and it’s one of the narrowest car seats on the market, giving you more space in your car. Here’s the run-down on the Radian:

  • Usage: Your new baby can ride rear-facing in her Radian RXT car seat from 5 to 45 pounds. Rear-facing is the safest way to ride (check out crash test videos on Youtube for a sobering demonstration), so the high rear-facing limit keeps your child safer for longer. When she graduates from rear-facing, she can ride in the five-point harness from 20-80 pounds. Finally, the Radian RXT works as a high-backed booster seat that protects kids up to 120 pounds – that is, right until your child is tall enough to sit without any booster whatsoever.

  • Safety: Along with that awesome steel alloy frame, which disseminates crash forces away from your child’s body, the Diono Radian RXT car seat features reinforced sidewalls, an adjustable head support, the patented SafeStop energy absorbing harness, and EPS foam that surrounds your child’s head and body for complete Side Impact Protection (SIP).

  • Installation: The SuperLATCH system and deluxe push-on style connectors make installing your Radian RXT car seat a snap.

  • Comfort: The Radian RXT car seat snuggles the smallest passengers with removable infant support pillows. Once those are removed, your child will enjoy the advantages of memory foam padding, expandable sides, and a longer seat bottom for more room. Five harness positions let you tailor the fit perfectly for passengers of all sizes, and the car seat rides low on the seat so older kids can board easily on their own. Finally, the Radian RXT car seat comes with a cup holder, and slots for three more (sold separately).

  • Ease of use: The Radian RXT car seat is made to travel – while a seat that’s this sturdy isn’t light, it folds flat and comes with a carry strap, so you can take it along on trips abroad. The cover and head wings come off easily for cleaning; the car seat harness is easy to remove for cleaning or for conversion to a booster; the harness straps don’t twist; and convenient storage cubbies are provided for your tether, SafeStop, and lower LATCH connectors, to keep your Radian RXT looking neat when they’re not in use.

In the end, though, it all comes back to that steel frame, which Diono cites as the number one reason why parents buy Diono Radian RXT car seats. Look for reviews of this seat, and you’ll find endorsements from countless emergency professionals, and they know what they’re talking about. One dad reviewer summarized it nicely: “As an emergency responder, these seats look like they are designed for NASCAR.”

Specifications:

Measurements while folded: 28.5" H x 17" W x 10" D

Usage:

Rear-facing: 5-45 lbs. with at least 1.5” of car seat above the child’s head or total height of 44”

Booster seat: 50-120 lbs. with a child less than 57” tall, but child’s shoulders must also be at or above the 4th set of harness slots

* Diono was called Sunshine Kids at the time, but the car seats and the fabulous steel alloy frames remain the same. We should also point out that while 38 cars were destroyed in the parking garage collapse, not a single person was injured.

Easy to use (once installed),

Pros:

easy in and out - no high sides to get past, slim design means less back seat space, safety rating

Cons:

cumbersome to install, no instructions came in packaging (?!?!?!!!), directions on line not easy to follow, cost

Thankfully we have not had to put this seat to the full test but from day to day use, we're pretty happy. I can only compare to our infant car seat and this one is much easier to manuever our son into and out of. I wish it was easier to tighten once he's sitting in there. Disappointed with packaging -- received this item with NO instructions. They were available online but not on mobile site so required printing, etc.. and weren't that clear/easy to follow. Will need to go to a Car Seat Safety check spot before feeling confident it's installed right.

Excellent for a small car

Pros:

Slim profile, comfortable, safe, good for tall baby

Cons:

Difficult installation

We have had the Radian for about a month now, and we are very pleased with the purchase. We drive a Honda Accord and will soon need to fit two carseats in the backseat, so we were looking for something that wasn't extremely bulky. Thanks to Magic Beans' amazing customer service, we tried out two models in our car, the Britax Boulevard (or perhaps it was the Marathon...) and the Diono Radian. While the Britax was MUCH easier to install, ultimately the Radian had everything else we were looking for. It just took up SO much less space in the backseat. Our daughter (11 months old at the time) is also extremely tall, and she already looked somewhat "too cozy" in the Britax, as though she would grow out of it before long. We were also very impressed with the Radian's seat's steel frame.

Now that we've been driving around with the Radian for a month, we definitely feel that we made the right decision. Our daughter seems very comfortable in it, and she seems to love that it's very upright so she can look out the window. It also makes it pretty easy to get her in and out of the car. We ended up purchasing the angle adjuster, which gave us a little more room in the car, but it does sit her *very* upright, which is an issue when she falls asleep - her head often slumps down or to the side in ways that look uncomfortable (though she doesn't seem to mind that much).

The only real downside was that installation was very cumbersome. With the backpack feature, it definitely seems possible to travel with it, despite its weight, but it's hard to imagine trying to install it in grandma's car in the airport arrival line.

Bottom line: we'd enthusiastically recommend the carseat, especially to those for whom space is an issue. We would even more enthusiastically recommend the customer service at Magic Beans. I have no idea how we would have known which seat was best for us if we weren't able to try them out in the car. If you go to the store in Brookline, try to work with Melanie. She was amazing and SO helpful! She answered a million questions and was so patient with us, showing us how to install the seats in our car even though it was freezing outside.

Nice seat!

Pros:

Very sturdy, comfortable for child, not overly large (wide)

Cons:

Heavy

Bought this seat to replace our infant carrier car seat. Was recommended by the store representative, and we have been so happy with it! We have had this seat for 2 months now. Very happy with how sturdy it feels in the cars. Read initially that it's confusing to use, but after a couple times of changing vehicles, it's been easy to do. Our son seems very comfortable in this seat (we've used it for multiple long car rides, including a 6 hour car trip). What we also like is that we can comfortably fit 2 adults in the other seats around our child, and also can fit this carseat, an infant seat, and an adult in the back row of the car as well. We've also taken it on a flight - took only a couple of minutes to get it installed on the airplane seat. It is much heavier than the infant seat (imagine that...) and am not sure how it weighs compared to other convertible seats, but imagine we couldn't get all these other features and have a featherweight seat (especially for safety). Overall, 5 stars!!

Pros:

Cons:

Loving these seats!

Pros:

Easy to install

Cons:

Takes up a lot of room in a small SUV

I'm loving these car seats. I bought them as the next step for my twins and they seem to be enjoying the seats too! These are so easy to install with the latch and seat belt. The boys are higher up so they can see more and appear to be very comfortable! My only issue is, rear facing, the seats take up a lot of room in my small SUV. This is only temporary until I turn the boys front facing.

Perfect size, super comfortable

Pros:

Don't take over backseat, wipeable

We love these car seats and wish we had bought them with our older son. We can finally fit an adult in the backseat with our two boys. They are clearly much more comfortable than other seats we've had. And they wipe clean.

Fits perfectly in our truck. Our son is comfortable. We are using it rear-facing now but will switch to front facing in a few months. Sturdy, safe and attractive. I'd buy it again and again.

Great carseat for every age

Pros:

Narrow, Comfortable, Safe, Sturdy, Stylish

Cons:

Heavy

We have two of these carseats and think they are great. They are narrow and allow for someone to sit in the middle back seat. My daughter is one and faces backwards and is very comfortable; while my 4 year old son feels like a big boy in his (and loves his cup holder). The safety reviews are up there with the Britax. My only complaint is that it is pretty heavy to carry when we have to travel (but it folds up nicely into a bag). If I have a third child I would buy another one!

Great Purchase

Pros:

Easy to Adjust, Great Features

Cons:

Bulky

I bought this as a second carseat for another car. It has the luxury of having places for cups and toys and is easier to adjust from the previous model.

compact and comfortable

Pros:

Sturdy, Safe, Stylish, Easy to Adjust, Comfortable

Cons:

Heavy

This is a wonderful carseat for when your child is over age 2 and can face forward. It is very tall, so would be tough to place in rear facing position. Narrow which is great because you can seat a small person in the middle between our car seats. We may swap out our Britax for another of these when our younger son turns 2.

car seat that does it all

Pros:

Safe, Easy to install

Cons:

Bulky

As a parent and physician safety was key in choosing a car seat. I spent many hours researching car seats and felt this one was my best choice. We first purchased this seat for my son (now 22 months) and recently bought a second one for the arrival of our second child. It is a little bulky when back facing but very easy to use.
