About the The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

How does a crayon feel when you pull off its wrapper? According to the picture book The Day the Crayons Quit, it’s a rather vulnerable feeling.

And that’s only the beginning of the quandaries a little boy named Duncan encounters when his disgruntled crayons demand a break: Blue is tired of coloring huge expanses of water; Red is annoyed that he always has to work on holidays; Black is tired of always being used for outlines; Purple is a detail-oriented fellow and hates being forced to color outside of the lines. And Yellow and Orange are squabbling over who gets to be the color of the sun. In the meantime, poor Duncan just wants to color – what’s a little artist to do?

This clever picture book by author Drew Daywalt and illustrator Oliver Jeffers provides both laughs and inspiration for kids, who will demand to have this book read to them again and again. You may even find that they’re inspired to make their own art – created with careful consideration to the feelings of the crayons, of course. The Day the Crayons Quit is suggested for ages 3 and up.
