Day 6 – Radian XT Car Seat

Radian XT Car Seat

The first time I saw a Radian car seat demonstration was in the parking lot behind our store in Brookline. Russ Berger, one of the owners of Sunshine Kids had come to show it to us, way back in 2005. It was a cold and drizzly day, and if I’m being completely honest, I wasn’t overly enthusiastic. I thought the folding mechanism was interesting, but the seat was heavy and the seat was very low. But then, Russ explained that the profile of the seat was designed to allow for three of them to fit in a standard back seat. Wow. Every single day, we have parents coming in desperate for a car seat that will save them from the dreaded minivan. With the Radian, we could finally offer them some hope.

Once the Radian actually hit the stores, it became incredibly popular (so much for my gut reaction). I bought one early on, and found that, in spite of the weight, it really was excellent for traveling. I also realized that the low seat made it easier for toddlers to climb in and out independently. It also felt less “baby-ish” to preschoolers and early elementary-age kids. Plus, the technology incorporated into these seats is really amazing. The steel frame is very strong, and the company is so proud of the seat’s performance in crash tests, it posts the results for all to see.

The Radian XT model goes from birth to 80 pounds (it does not convert to a booster seat, though – it uses a 5-point harness throughout), and is FAA-approved for airplane travel It incorporates a height-adjustable, aluminum-reinforced head support that adds advanced side-impact protection to the seat. The Radian XT is our Day 6 giveaway! Enter to win now.
