A hard day’s work

Sorry for the quiet around here. We’ve been moving the Magic Beans warehouse this week, and let me tell you, that’s been an adventure. We purchased used shelving for the new warehouse, and it arrived in a patently filthy condition. In all our planning and coordination for the move, we had not accounted for 600 shelves that would each need to be scrubbed clean. Coincidentally, my husband had not assigned me to any particular job, figuring that I would fill in as needed. So as it turned out, I was needed to scrub shelves.

The past few days here in Boston have been brutally hot, with temperatures hovering in the upper nineties. We had to move tens of thousands of products, many of them heavy strollers and car seats. The warehouse does not have air conditioning, so it was tough work. But everyone – the moving crew and the Magic Beans staff – was amazing.

I work at a desk most of the time, and it’s been a while since I was called upon to do manual labor (and my shelf washing probably wouldn’t hold up as tough compared to what everyone else was doing).  In my job, at the end of each day sometimes it can be hard to measure productivity. The phone rings, e-mails stream in, distraction happens. Things on the to-do list fail to get done. But the shelves were quantifiably satistying. Even though I was hot, soaking wet and filthy almost beyond recognition, it felt really good.

ps – to all the Magic Beans people reading this who helped with the move, thank you. You’ve made me very proud.
