Fine Dining. Kids welcome?

We recently took a family outing to the New England Aquarium. We spiraled up the big tank, held some starfish and retreated from the crowds in favor of finding some lunch. We ended up at Sel de la Terre, a sibling of Frank McClelland’s superb Back Bay institution, L’espalier. I had heard rumors that children are permitted, but as it turned out, they were more than just permitted – they were welcome.

The kids’ menu is tongue-in-cheek gourmet (and mostly in French), but the pommes frites were among the best I’ve ever tasted. The bread basket was truly exceptional, the food was delicious and the staff was incredibly gracious and friendly. More than even the food, it was just a pleasure to enjoy the ambiance of a really nice restaurant together as a family. There were a lot of babies and kids among the tables, so word is probably getting out. But if you’re in the neighborhood and looking to do something special with your kids, this is a good choice.

As a side note, Frank McClelland is probably the most vegetarian-friendly A-List chef on the Boston restaurant scene. There were good options on the menu and the kitchen was also willing to make modifications.

  1. This is incredible information, thanks so much for sharing it. I’m ready to pack the kids up and leave for the aquarium and Sel de la Terre right now! Who would have thought that a restaurant like that would welcome our little ones?
