Fussy baby? Put away the car keys.

When you’re bleary-eyed in the middle of the night with an inconsolable, shrieking newborn, you’ll do practically anything to soothe the savage beast. Conventional wisdom has it that colicky babies often calm down with a ride in the car, or, in a pinch, strapped into a carseat on top of a running clothes dryer. Something about those vibrations help fussy ... Read More »

ubi changes everything

This easily the most brilliant thing I saw during my first day of the show, and I’ll be really surprised if I see something that trumps it over the next three days. The ubi is billed as a modern changing table, but it’s more than that. It’s really a design innovation that will set parents free from the concept of ... Read More »

How d’you Doomoo?

I’ve been a huge fan conceptually of the Doomoo chair since I first heard of it more than two years ago. Maybe it’s sentimental. I bought a similiar, adult size chair from a European furniture store in a fit of entitlement when my first pregnancy went overdue. Ambling around downtown Boston, hugely rotund and completely miserable, I sat on the ... Read More »

Phil & Ted & Ted & Ted & Ted

I know how many of you are waiting for an update on the Phil & Teds situation, so I made sure to hit that booth today to get the details. I have no photos to share – they were incredibly vigilant about that. What I found was a bit strange. I’m not sure I understand the logic, but I’ll present ... Read More »

ABC Show – Day 1

I have a lot to cover, and I’m not sure how long I can keep my eyes open and be coherent. I will do my best. The show is, as expected, enormous and utterly overwhelming. But with quantity, fortunately, comes quality. I got through roughly 1/3 of the show today, and had plenty to get excited about. Major themes so ... Read More »

Jet lag is a beautiful thing

We arrived in Vegas late last night. Although I didn’t get to sleep until almost 4am Eastern time, I still popped out of bed, fresh as a daisy at 5am Pacific (or 8am Eastern). Let’s see how long I can keep up this schedule… I’m testing out blogging by e-mail so that I can send pictures and quickie updates from ... Read More »

Two Modern Crib Recalls

Stokke and NettoCollection have both issued voluntary recalls related to their cribs. The issues are completely unrelated to Chinese manufacturing. For Stokke, the problem is with the mattress. Some of the mattresses included with the cribs were made too small, so they leave a gap between the edge of the mattress and the bars of the crib. No injuries have ... Read More »

Ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby

My kids were both die-hard lactivists. They were born that way. They simply didn’t believe in bottles. Personally, life would have been a lot easier if they hadn’t been quite so militant, but at the time, my lifestyle more or less accommodated round-the-clock nursing, so I didn’t push back too hard. I did try a half dozen different kinds of ... Read More »

Maxi Cosi delayed… for some.

The Maxi Cosi Mico infant seat, which is compatible with the Quinny Zapp and the Buzz, is already a hot commodity, thanks in part to a production problem that has dramatically reduced the availability of the seat during the first weeks of the US launch. Apparently, a supplier of a key component failed to deliver the correct number of parts, ... Read More »

Peek a who?

Babywearing offers many, many benefits for both the baby and the caregiver, but climate control isn’t one of them. When it’s very warm, wearing a baby can be a hot, sweaty affair for everyone involved. When it’s cold, it’s a constant struggle to fit the carrier over a winter coat and keep small extremities warm. But I got a postcard ... Read More »
