Thinkfun Math Dice

About the Math Dice

Unless you're a fan of tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, when you think of dice, you probably think of the standard six-sided cube. However, the world of dice includes many variations – for instance, "random direction" dice have an arrow on each side, and the direction that the arrow on top of the dice points is the direction that players of a game move. Or there are dice with more than six sides, all of which have elaborate names – a 50-sided die, for instance, is a icosakaipentagonal trapezohedron. Try saying that five times fast!

The Math Dice game from Thinkfun uses a twelve-sided die (a dodecahedron) to generate random numbers that players turn into equations. It's an on-the-fly problem-solving game that's easy to learn but challenging to play: choose your target number by rolling two dice and multiplying those numbers. Then, roll three dice and use those numbers to create an equation that is closest to, or equal to, the target. The equation can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or even powers. For example, if your target number is 32, and your other three dice roll 5, 2, and 6, your equation could be (5 x 6) + 2 = 32.

The resulting challenge and competition is a fun and flexible way to practice math – way more fun than doing rote problems from a book. To add further challenge, kids can incorporate the latest thing they've learned in math class, so this game can continue to be entertaining and educational up through high school! Includes two target dice, three scoring dice, a lesson booklet, and a storage bag. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
