About the Thinkfun Robot Turtles Game for Little Programmers

You know you’ve found a good game for preschoolers when it includes sentences like this in the instruction manual: “Most importantly: the Turtle Mover MUST MAKE SILLY NOISES while moving the turtles.”

Yes, silly noises are key to gameplay in Robot Turtles, from ThinkFun! This game does a superb job of making kids giggle while they learn, and the lesson at the heart of this children’s educational game is an important one: kids learn basic computer programming concepts as they navigate their turtles across the board. But they’ll be too busy having fun to notice!

This is how Robot Turtles works: each child selects a different colored turtle, and places them in the corner of the board. The adult player (known as the Turtle Mover) creates a maze for the turtles to navigate. The Turtle Masters then play their “code cards” to instruct the Turtle Mover on which way the turtles should go, with the goal of capturing a jewel. Every Turtle Master who captures a jewel wins!

The unique play pattern in which the adult moves all of the items on the board is meant to mimic the way a computer needs to be given instructions to execute programs. It also adds a game dynamic that kids love: they get to boss a parent around! And grownups love the opportunity to get silly – and watch their kids learning, too.

The Robot Turtles game was created by Dan Shapiro, a father of two, and this game was the best-selling game in Kickstarter history. ThinkFun picked up the game as part of their commitment to computer literacy for kids, and to offer this fantastic educational game to a much broader audience. Robot Turtles comes with a game board, 4 bug tiles, 36 obstacle tiles, 4 jewel tiles, 4 robot turtle tiles, 4 code card decks, and instructions; suggested for ages 4-8, with 1-4 players (plus a grownup).

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
