Save on the Best Gear & Furniture at Magic Beans on Tax-Free Weekend, August 10-11
Tax-Free Weekend is on the horizon, with plenty of opportunities to save – after all, sales tax is 6.25% in Massachusetts, and that adds up fast. Using our Quick-Add Registry, I put together a quick list of baby essentials for a hypothetical shopper, and ran some numbers. (And by the way, the Quick-Add Registry is really fun to use!) Here’s a demonstration of what you can buy, and what you can buy with your savings.
The Nursery
My imaginary mom-shopper lives in downtown Boston and has a small-ish apartment, so she went with the DucDuc AJ Crib, which has an attached bookshelf, adding both visual flair and storage space. All DucDuc furniture is made to order at their factory in Connecticut, so order this crib in advance to make sure it’s ready on time. But this kind of quality is worth the extra planning – look at those amazing all-natural, non-toxic hand-rubbed finishes!
With the AJ Crib, this stylish modern mom is getting the matching AJ 3-Drawer Changer/Dresser and the elegant, ultra-modern Collins Rocker, which comes in irresistible Marimekko floral patterns.
So let’s see how this adds up:
AJ Crib with specialty finish: $1795 ($112 tax)
AJ Dresser/Changer: $1545 ($96 tax)
Collins Rocker: $1595 ($100 tax)
The total tax on these three furniture items comes out to $308 – our hypothetical mom-to-be just saved enough to get a Nook Pebble Lite crib mattress!
City Strolling (and saving)
My hypothetical city mom really wants a Bugaboo Cameleon Stroller (really, who wouldn’t?) for leisurely strolls through Back Bay and the South End, and the occasional stop by our store at the Prudential Mall.
She takes the subway a lot, though, so that’s going to require a back-up lightweight stroller, so she’s also getting an UPPAbaby G-Luxe Stroller, an 11-pound beauty that’s one of the lightest reclining strollers we’ve ever seen.
Here’s how it totals out:
Bugaboo Cameleon 3 Stroller: $979 ($61 tax)
UPPAbaby G-Luxe Stroller: $219 ($14 tax)
Buy these strollers this weekend, and not only do you have a complete package for city strolling, but you’ve just saved enough on taxes to buy a JJ Cole Urban Bundleme to keep your baby cozy and warm this winter ($49.99) and a JJ Cole Infant Body Support to ensure that your little one is properly supported in her stroller seat ($22.99).
Feeding Gear
You wouldn’t think it would take so many accessories just to feed your baby with something that’s already attached to your body, but breastfeeding is so much easier with the right tools. Our hypothetical mom-shopper has heard the buzz about Bravado Essential Nursing Bra Tanks, which provide great support and a stylish look for everyday nursing at home or on the go. She also wants a classic Boppy Nursing Pillow, and a stylish Bebe Au Lait Nursing Cover.
But that’s not all: in a few months, it will be time to introduce solids, so my hypothetical mom-shopper decided to think ahead and get the Bloom Fresco Chrome High Chair. Ok, maybe she just chose it because she couldn’t resist how beautiful it is, but it’s also the rare high chair that you can use as a spot for a newborn to lounge months before you actually need a high chair for feeding, so it’s worth having this chair at home and ready to go when baby is born. The Beaba Babycook Pro baby food machine is also a good registry pick for those who are thinking ahead, since the months are going to fly by before you’re ready to start making purees.
So let’s see how this feeding gear totals up:
Bravado Essential Nursing Bra Tanks, one for every weekday: $44.99 x 5 ($14 tax)
Boppy Nursing Pillow: $32.99 ($2 tax)
Bebe Au Lait Nursing Cover: $34.99 ($2 tax)
Bloom Fresco High Chair: $549.99 ($34 tax)
Beaba Babycook Pro: $149.99 ($9 tax)
We’ve just saved $61 in taxes – more than enough to buy another nursing tank. Which is what I would definitely spend it on. There’ll be more than enough laundry to do without washing the same nursing tank over and over again, right?
The Grand Total
Of course, there are a lot more items on my hypothetical registry, but let’s just see how the savings add up with what we have here for starters. Let’s hear a drum roll:
Nursery items: $308
Strollers: $75
Feeding items: $61
TOTAL: $444
…and with that, our fictional mom just saved enough in taxes to buy a Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seat ($399), and then some!
Fake shopping is lots of fun, but shopping and saving for real is even more fun. Whether you’re putting together your nursery, getting key baby gear, or shopping for registry items for a loved one, the time is now – get amazing savings at our Tax-Free Weekend, on August 10-11!
